For The Lassi Lover

While many think of mango as the flavor of all lassis, there are actually other varieties that are very popular in their own right. At All India Cafe in Pasadena and Glendale, we serve mango lassi, sweet lassi, and masala lassi. Here's a breakdown...

Our sweet lassis infuse homemade yogurt with rosewater, but other varieties can include fruit juices like strawberry or lemon instead of rosewater. Saffron lassis are another sweet option -- these are incredibly popular in Rajasthan and Gujarat in India. Then, of course, there is the mango lassi, which is made with mango pulp. Some mango lassis have added sugar, but at All India Cafe, we prefer to serve a healthy, natural variety and keep our offerings free of unnecessary sugar by using fresh mangoes that are sweet enough on their own.

The masala lassi is mildly spiced, and is an example of traditional lassis that are mild and/or salty. These are also made with our housemade yogurt. Traditionally, lassis are a savory drink -- a simple and refreshing blend of yogurt, water, and spices, which can include cumin.

Lassis have always been most popular eaten with lunch, but can truly be part of any meal. The yogurt is an excellent source of probiotics and healthy bacteria for your gut, which can alleviate many stomach issues. Adding turmeric to one's lassi is an ancient folk remedy for gastroenteritis (also known as the stomach flu). Turmeric combats inflammation, so this remedy is certainly one that can be relied on!

What is your favorite kind of lassi to order with your All India Cafe lunch or dinner? If you're not a fan of lassis, what is your go-to drink with Indian food?

Royals of Pasadena: Rose Queen & Royal Court Exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of History

Open through February 11, 2018 | 12:00pm - 4:00pm

In honor of the inauguration of the 100th Rose Queen® in 2018, PMH presents an exhibition celebrating the Pasadena Tournament of Roses® Royal Court. From the first Royal Court in 1905, young women of Pasadena and its environs have graced the Tournament of Roses and served as ambassadors for the city of Pasadena almost every year. This unique exhibition explores the traditions and history of the Royal Court, from the selection process to the Coronation and Rose Parade. Exquisite Coronation gowns of past Rose Queens and Princesses are on display, as well as daywear, accessories, and jewelry from the Court wardrobes, all generously lent by former members of the Royal Court, beginning with the gown of Margaret Huntley Main, the oldest surviving Queen (1940 court). From the sleek satin gowns of the 1940s, to the tulle confections of William Cahill in the 1950s and 60s, and the modern-day glamour of Tadashi Shoji, the elegance of the Royal Court is celebrated. Vivid photos and ephemera documenting this century-long Pasadena tradition enhance the exhibit, including original design drawings of the Queen’s Float. A special highlight is Queen’s crowns from the past century, on loan from the Tournament of Roses.

Group tours are available for this exhibition upon request. Exhibition tours are approximately one-hour long. Tickets: $15/person. Group size: 10-20 people.

Below The Underground: Renegade Art and Action in 1990s Mexico Exhibition at the Armory Center for the Arts in Old Pasadena

Through Sunday, January 21, 2018

Screen Shot 2018-01-16 at 4.29.39 PM.png

The art of the 1990s in Mexico has acquired an almost mythic status in recent years, coming to represent the moment that Mexican contemporary art assumed a place in the global arena. Below the Underground: Renegade Art and Action in 1990s Mexico will add a new layer to the growing interest in this period by drawing attention to artists, such as Taniel Morales, Andrea Ferreyra, and Elvira Santamaría, who operated in the margins, away from the widening mainstream. The exhibition explores the alternative, often clandestine art practices that emerged during this period marked by increasing violence, currency devaluation, industrial pollution, and political corruption. Against this turbulent backdrop, artists in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and elsewhere devised alternative practices and new exhibition spaces to show work that often directly engaged the politics and economics of the moment.

This classic dish features an assortment of mixed vegetables in a very savory yellow curry sauce  made with coconut milk. The Paneer (Indian cheese) is an addition; we also offer Tofu, Fish, Lamb, or Chicken.

All India Cafe's Paneer is unique in that we make it fresh, in the restaurant, and never, ever buy it pre-made.

This South Indian specialty is a crispy crepe made with rice and lentil flour, and filled with spiced potatoes. It's always served with sambar & coconut chutney for an unforgettable flavor.

Harsimran: Fish Tikka (Salmon)

We cook the Paneer with freshly peeled tomatoes, and our homemade, fresh ginger & garlic paste for hours to get the amazing taste you know and love. (Shown above with tofu)

Santokh: Tandoori Platter

Sizzling chicken (tikka & tandoori) sheesh kebab & boti kebab, with naan. What more could you ask for?!

What is your go-to dish on our menu that you never stray from?

1 of KCET's 5 Best Indian Restaurants in Pasadena

All India Cafe
All India Cafe offers some of the slightly harder to find Indian dishes from the South, like masala dosa, a crispy crepe made from fermented rice and lentil flour and stuffed with spiced potatoes, lentils, and coconut chutney. Not to mention some harder to find street food, like a lamb frankie, India’s answer to a burrito with a handmade chewy flour tortilla stuffed with lamb masala, two chutneys, and marinated onions. Other complex street foods you can find are bhel puri, a mix of crispy puffed rice, potatoes. and crispy chickpea flour noodles dressed with tart lime juice and sweet tamarind chutney. Vegans will be ecstatic to learn that All India Cafe caters especially to them, eschewing traditional meat and cream heavy popular favorites like chicken tikka masala and doing a “Tofu Tikka Masala” instead, made with coconut milk.
